Here’s what former attendees say about our retreats:
The Broken and Hopeful retreat is an event I look forward to from year to year. It's hard to describe the love that is shared among the women of all ages who attend. It is a time of sharing in a very safe and comfortable atmosphere with others who are so compassionate. And it's ok if you don't want to share. It's not a time for study...although I've learned so much by being there. It's a time to develop relationships and see God at work in other lives. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a hug or likes to give hugs to others!!
I found the Broken & Hopeful Retreat through a Google search, so I didn’t know Hannah or anyone else involved with the ministry in advance. When I attended, the women were very welcoming and ready to talk about spiritual growth and emotional difficulties at a deeper and more meaningful level than you find at many other women’s retreats. There is worship and teaching that focus on a particular topic and set the stage for discussion that digs deeply into how applying truth about God’s character helps us to find help and healing for our difficulties. Hannah values not putting words into God’s mouth, by which I mean she does not offer empty platitudes (e.g., “someday you’ll know why this happened,” “God wants you to be happy”). Instead, she seeks truth from the Bible and encourages attendees to anchor into that (e.g., even if you never know why, God is still good and can be trusted; God wants you to have joy found in trusting Him more deeply). This retreat does not focus on fluff, so you won’t find a lot of surface-level talk or filler activities. Instead, you’ll be with other women who are open about their own struggles and value seeking honest support and encouragement from others who are also doing their best to stay connected to God amidst the trials of the world.
A childhood friend who lives out of state introduced me to the Broken and Hopeful retreat a few years back. I have attended several women's retreats over the years, but none quite like this one. Retreats are often marked by pounding worship music, tearful altar calls and craning your neck to see the speaker on stage only- to give up and settle for watching on the big screen. This is certainly not the case for the Broken and Hopeful retreat. This retreat which usually hosts 30 to 40 women, is incredibly intimate. By the end of the first session, you know you have been pulled into something special. The Lord has given Hannah and the other teachers a true gift for seeing every woman in the room and for speaking truth in a tender, loving, direct, funny and kind way. As women, we often carry the whole world on our backs and during this retreat, these women create a space for you to lay it all down at Jesus' feet. Equipped with her keyboard, guitar and beautiful voice, Leah sings her heart out to Jesus during worship and invites us to do the same. I have attended this retreat 3 times now and I can honestly say that God has revealed immense Truth to me as I sit, furiously filling my notebook pages with wisdom. I have connected with incredibly brave, wise and real women during these weekends and always leave knowing I am loved and seen by my Creator. I have even started working with Hannah for counseling, which God has used to heal parts of me that I was too afraid to give to Him. I will be forever grateful to my friend for inviting me along.
